Dear Friends:
Please find the 2023 Legislative Report #3 attached.
Over the past couple weeks, your FOP has been busy at the statehouse testifying at committee hearings and meeting with lawmakers. It has been a productive session thus far.
A couple of the bills we are supporting have already passed third reading in the House and moved to the Senate. HB1016, which would establish merit boards for most Indiana municipalities, passed through committee hearing and is now headed to the Senate. Sen. Sandlin is sponsoring the bill in the Senate.
HB1006 also passed through the House and is moving to the Senate. That bill would provide mental health treatment for certain persons who have been arrested, hopefully helping to ease overcrowding in jails. Senators Freeman, Crider and Koch are sponsoring the bill in the Senate.
Next week SCR5 is scheduled for a hearing on February 7, 2023. SCR5 is a Senate Committee Resolution urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to rename a section of State Road 13 in Madison County the “Officer Noah Shahnavaz Memorial Mile.” Your FOP will be there to support the legislation.
Please feel free to contact President Owensby, Leo Blackwell, or myself for additional information.
Stay safe,
Ed
