Donald H. Austin
Donald H. Austin, 84, of Evansville, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018, at River Pointe Health Campus. He was born July 6, 1933, to the late Hardy H. and Helen (Schaefer) Austin.
Don graduated from Central High School in 1951, where he excelled in football, receiving the Kiwanis award and named All City. He attended Evansville College until drafted into the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a wounded veteran and received the Purple Heart. He returned home to marry the love of his life, Jane Ennis. Don retired from the Evansville Police Department as sergeant detective in the auto theft division. After retirement, he worked as a sales representative for Working Beverage for eight years and retired from United Auto Leasing after 12 years as a leasing agent. He was a past president of the Fraternal Order of Police and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a former member of St. Mary's Auxiliary and was a volunteer shuttle driver at St. Mary's Hospital, which he loved. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Don loved going to his grandchildren's sporting events and riding on his lawn mower. He was an avid golfer.
Donald is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane; sons, Donald, Jr. (Brenda), Jeff (Diane), and Mike (Kathy); daughter, Kim (Tom Haines); grandchildren, Kyle, Taryn (Brandon), Andrea, Brad (Kaitlynn), Jason, Caitlin, Makayla, and Logan; great-grandson, Cameron; sister, Beverly Fuchs; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Alvey; and brother- and sister-in-law, Bob and Marge Ennis. Also surviving are two stepgrandchildren; five great-stepgrandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins, Gary and Keith Austin.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his grandson, Luke Austin; and brothers-in-law, John Fuchs and Jim Alvey.
Visitation will be from 2 until 8 p.m. Monday, January 8, 2018, at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 South Hebron, where a memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 until 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 2301 North Stockwell Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. at the church, with Father Zach Etienne and Father Ted Temple officiating.
Entombment will be at St. Joseph Mausoleum.
